For the vast majority of humankinds history conflict was simply resolved by power. Who has most power strength and was prepared to use it.
Appeal to Rights
Within any society, in order to maintain peace, societies have created systemns of Laws and rights and under thoses laws the rights of people have been defined. And within legal and governemental systems a person appeals to the higher authjority to enforce their rights.
Appeal to Interests
Much of modern Alternative Dispute Resolution methodology focuss on the interestes of the parties involved in resolving conflict.
